About QuakeUnity.com
The Formation of QuakeUnity.com
QuakeUnity.com was formed on the foundation of of the popular PlanetQuake3.net & PlanetQuake4.net websites. PlanetQuake3.net opened its doors in the summer of 1999, serving the Quake3 community under that title until the site merged with its sister site PlanetQuake4.net in 2006. All of PlanetQuake3.net and PlanetQuake4.net's news, download, and article databases are preserved on the QuakeUnity.com site under their original addresses. The website now not only encompasses Quake III Arena and Quake4, but Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the upcoming title from SplashDamage and id Software.
How it all Started:
It all started when I bought Quake2 back in 1998. I really didn't get into the game until I began talking with some friends at school which prompted me to start playing it. They directed me to the sites such as BluesNews to get updates and find the latest news. That's basically how I got started into the Quake series and the rest is history. I really got into Quake2 in 1998 and started to play it heaving online, with my powerful 56k modem. I would not get DSL till the summer of 1999. Only a short time after I started playing Quake2, id announced the latest title in the Quake series, Quake III Arena.
I really don't remember the first time I heard about Quake3, but by the end of 1998 I had a Quake3 site running. Logo done in paintbrush site layout in frames. Pretty ugly. By summer 1998 I had opened my site PlanetQuake3.net. Skipping ahead to the end of 1999 PlanetQuake3 gets its first big break. We join the STOMPED.com network which provided us with receiving free hosting and revenue from traffic. The year spent on STOMPED increased PlanetQuake3 popularity tremendously. During the time being part of the STOMPED network PlanetQuake3 got heavily into the hosting of Quake3 files. It really turned out to be a good idea since there were very few good Quake3 file sites at that time. So 2001 approaches and it happens CNET's GameCenter site which was funding STOMPED was being closed therefore STOMPED couldn't afford to continue to operate. In February of 2001 PlanetQuake3 stops being updated and it left like that till September 18 2001 when the site re-opens. During this time I spent all my free time playing Quake3 heavily and really started to get good. When the site re-opened in September 2001 things started off slow. We mirrored a few files here and there and traffic started to come in. A huge boost to the site was provided by id Software and the Bid For Power mod team when each of them linked to PlanetQuake3 for their files. That truly was a huge turning point in the history of PlanetQuake3. Each of the files mirrored for both id Software and the Bid For Power mod team got downloaded over 100,000 times. From that time on PlanetQuake3 has proved itself to be the leading Quake3 Arena site on the internet by providing the latest news and files to the Quake3 community.
In 2005, PlanetQuake4.net opened its doors to the emerging Quake4 community. The site would remain separate from PlanetQuake3.net until later in 2006 when the two sites merged to form the ultimate Quake3 and Quake4 portal. As with planetQuake3.net, Planetquake4.net excelled in the hosting of downloads. Along with downloads, the site also featured exclusive interviews and previews.
