Therese "trito" Andersson is a member of the hugely successful Girlz
of Destruction clan which held the three top spots in the Ms. QuakeCon
tournament. trito herself placed third place in the first annual Ms.
QuakeCon tournament. You can chat with trito and the rest of the g0d crew on IRC
in #g0d on irc.quakenet.org and irc.enterthegame.com
PlanetQuake3:
How did you get into gaming in the first place?
g0d-trito: When I studied at the university I saw some guys in my class
playing the Quake3 demo on the school's computers. At this point I was only
playing console games and cute shockwave games on the computer. Multiplayer
games was unfamiliar to me. I had been playing Doom on Playstation and the Q3
demo reminded me of the game. I tried the Q3 demo at school playing some bots
and later on I started playing multiplayer. I loved the game right away and
every day I was begging the guys in my class to stay after school and play Q3
demo. Some weeks later I met my present boyfriend and I found out he also played
Q3. He told me about clans, IRC, tournaments, configs and the gaming community
in general. This made me buy the game, my goal was to be good enough to play in
a clan.
PlanetQuake3: Was it hard competing with members of your own clan for
money?
g0d-trito: You don't want to knock a team member out of the tournament,
so of course it's harder to compete against a team member than a person outside
the clan. But as soon as the game starts I'm just focusing on the game, and I
don't care who my opponent is.
PlanetQuake3:
Were you happy with the choice of maps for the QuakeCon Q3 tourney?
g0d-trito: I was fine with the maps, but I didn't like the fact that they
changed the rules 5 minutes before the tournament started, making each game a
random map instead of best of three. My preparation before the tournament had
looked different if I knew it was random map draw, I would have put more
practice trying to be better at my worse map (which is dm6)..
PlanetQuake3: What are your thoughts on Quake4 multiplayer. Do you see
yourself playing the game competitively the future?
g0d-trito: I can't wait for the game to be released. I can totally see
myself playing the game. I hope I will like it as much as Q3.
PlanetQuake3: What is the average day of trito like?
g0d-trito: I get up around 7 am to go to work. I'm working as webmaster,
during the days I sit in front of the computer programming PHP and doing photo
editing and graphics in Photoshop. After work, I go to the gym where I do
spinning or another activities. I get home, shower, have dinner and go on the
computer around 8 pm to play Q3 and talk on IRC. I try to go to bed before
midnight, but I always play "just one more game" and "just one
game more" and end up going to bed after 1 am.
PlanetQuake3: Who do you play against the most?
g0d-trito: Mostly I just connect to a Swedish duel server and play
whoever that joins. So I end up playing a lot of games against active Swedish
players like tmt, who is one of my favorite opponents. I have also played a lot
of games against sif|DWdanne and sif|qinpin lately who helped me prepare for the
Ms. Quakecon tournament.
PlanetQuake3:
What are some of your favorite Quake3 maps and mods?
g0d-trito: My favorite mod is OSP, but I also like Threewave CTFS. My
favorite duel map is hub3aeroq3. It's so intense and crazy with all portals. I
also like ztn3tourney1 which is a map I hated just some months ago.
PlanetQuake3: When playing in a match, are you ever nervous? How do
you prepare yourself for a big match?
g0d-trito: Before I big match I try to prepare by warming up, running
around on the map, try different weapon and movements, like certain jumps I want
to use in the game. I get nervous if I don't have full control of the computer
where I play. For example, if my config, sensitivity or graphics don't feel 100%
right. But when everything feels alright I don't get that nervous.
PlanetQuake3: Who is your biggest supporter?
g0d-trito: My boyfriend and sif|DWdanne
PlanetQuake3:
What do you plan on doing with the money you won at QuakeCon?
g0d-trito: Save it to be able to take time of from work to attend gaming
events and tournaments in the future.
PlanetQuake3: What are some of the activities you do besides gaming?
g0d-trito: Work out and beer drinking. ;)
PlanetQuake3: Are you concerned about how female gamers are perceived
by the public?
g0d-trito: The public in general doesn't know so much about gaming and I
haven't met any special reactions from them. If they react they often thinks
it's cool with and odd hobby. I don't know if this is the reaction other girls
get.
PlanetQuake3: Do you think more girls should get into gaming?
g0d-trito: I would love to see more girls in gaming. Imagine if as many
girls where into FPS games as boys, then the market would be twice as big.
Companies would be able to drop prices on hardware and game developers could put
even more money into developing games for us to play and to love.
PlanetQuake3:
It's every male Quakers dream to have a girlfriend that plays the game also.
Is there any way for them to lure their girlfriend towards the game?
g0d-trito: If your girlfriend likes to compete in sports, play video
games or just participate in competitions in general, I think there is a
big chance she will like Quake. Let her watch when you play and explain the game
when you are playing, so she understands that you are not just running around
shooting people, that you actually need to think a lot and have good strategy.
Let her play the easiest bot on an easy map (like dm1) and encourage her by
telling how impressed you are. Lie if you have to (hey, it's ok, it's for a good
cause). Explain how hard it is to learn this game and that you can definitely
tell she has talent and will learn the game quick. She won't believe you unless
you have some examples of what she doess extra well. Start introducing her into
strafe jumping, how to use the different weapons in different situations, rocket
jumps, the importance of amours and so on. Don't do it too quick though. Make
her learn one thing at a time, you don't want to confuse her. If she knows
nothing about gaming community, clans and tournaments, explain them to her, you
want her to understand how social gaming is. Help her get into IRC so she can
talk to other gamers. Let her play some FFA online (that's where you will find
the noobs and you want her to play easy players in the start so she doesn't get
to owned). Tell her about other female players and about female clans. In the
beginning that was a great inspiration for me. I wanted to be as good as other
females, so I one day could join their clan. Encourage her all the time and tell
her how surprised you are about her fast progress. Another trick to use, that I
actually used myself when I wanted my sister start gaming, is to play some 2vs2
games against bots. She will get a lot of frags and she will think she isn't
that bad compared to you. If you are lucky she will start to train harder just
because she hope she will beat you one day. Good luck all of you out there and
if you actually succeed and she becomes good, ask her to contact us in girlz 0f
destruction.
PlanetQuake3:
Lastly, what were some of your favorite moments from QuakeCon 2005?
g0d-trito: My game against Kornelia. I was warming up for about 15
minutes jumping around on ztn3tourney1. I was very focused when I played her and
that made it a really fun game to play. I really enjoyed watching Quake 4 too. I
didn't play it though because I wanted to focus on Q3 for the tournament. Also
I'm really thankful to VIA technologies. They strongly believed in us and
decided to sponsor us for QuakeCon. It was really nice to meet Keith from VIA in
person. Outside the tournaments there were so many happy moments all the time
since I met such nice people. I'm already looking forward to the next year.
